The Living Life Series is dedicated to Lord (武天) Bo Tien. The doctrine is in His image. The image is the doctrine. He who sees, understands and effects the doctrine sees and knows Him. He who does not see, know and effect the doctrine sees not and knows not the saint even if the saint or His image is beside him. The far may be near and the near may be far. Let the doctrine and the saint be part of our life. The lord saint in your life can be any heavenly saint of any religion, sect or school. The doctrine of truth is behind all and this is the Inner Truth that leads all (regardless of their religious affliliation or even if none) to inner peace and heaven on earth here and now and not just in the after life. The ideal worship and devotion is to know and effect the doctrine of God and the saints. The best gospel is the gospel of life. We learn from our life and the lives of others. The true temple is the world we live in. The sky is the roof of the temple and religions and sects are the pillars of the temple. All under Heaven are in the temple. The whole wide world and web is the temple and must be regarded as a sacred place --- a temple for living and learning. It is more important that everyone that counts plays a role in this universal temple if due focus is to be given to the Mission of Heaven. Men must not be distracted by the agenda of men and end up serving the mission of man. That would be a far cry from the Mission of Heaven.

Nothing more than self interest it seems

Learning Point No 349

When someone goes to a temple or church, is he going there to please himself or to please God?

Well, he will always say he wants to please God and that should be the case.

But two realities need be reckoned.

Would God need men to please him if he is God?  Certainly not, if he is God.

The second reality is that do men worship God for self interest? Yes and how is it that all say they don't?

Is it wrong to have self interest? It appears to be at the ideal level but in reality, if there is no self interest, no one would pursue anything in life, be it spiritual or otherwise.

Without something to gain would anyone go to a temple or church? Without self interest, would someone bring another to church and win him over to be an adherent?

Well somehow everyone is doing things supposedly to help others but in reality everyone is helping himself. God and saints know that.

This self interest is both an asset and a liability. Gains and blessings are baits to attract men to temples and churches.

The nectar of a flower attracts insects to it. The flower has to be that more attractive to capture attention.

In the same way, a church or temple must be attractive and worldly at that to be attractive to capture attention of men.

Once in the church or temple, the nectar of social opportunities to further one's worldly potential is invariably there. But all will say they come for spiritual or for God and saint. Isn't this the case?

Men claim to forsake self and self gain but they don't. This is the universal truth and perhaps also a weakness. But for sure, it is because that it exists that churches and temples can lure or bring men to spirituality.

At least, there will be some who will develop further and go from darkness to light and from light to more light. To put it more succinctly, there will be some who go from greed of self and worldly gains to spiritual gains.

Spiritual gains too is in a way fueled by greed. But without the nectar and without the greed, will men be anywhere near or in a church or temple?

Nothing more than self interest it seems. But at least it is a good start at spirituality and at saving the soul.

So if in a temple, if a man goes there to get acclaim for doing welfare work and get recognition for this by society, this is not really wrong but not really right either.

It is necessary and part of the initial steps in the spiritual ladder. Many go to a temple for gains by doing good works but this is still good and meritorious though to save the soul, men must cultivate and live in the Way or Tao and be at peace.

What is this Way? It is and you should know. It has to do with peace of heart. Give it more thought. Be mindful to have that more peace but not denial and indulgence, both of which give no peace.
